CONCEPT ART

Concept, or "comp" art, is a close cousin to storyboard art. Like storyboard, it is a little cruder than finished illustration, because it is a preliminary vision for a movie or commercial of the creative director (or "c/d") who is working with the artist. It has to be done quickly and accurately. It is not a whole visual script - just a snippet of it - one scene (or frame) perhaps. That scene has to be blown up and given more character, mood and detail. Perhaps it will be turned into finished illustration art later on, or ultimately go to photography. It can be created in pencil, pen and ink, magic markers, watercolor or even oils. My medium for this wonderful genre is digital art using a painterly program and a Wacom tablet. The reason for this is that the vision might spontaneously change drastically and the comp piece needs to be quickly altered; and that might happen a number of times. My service here has to be to the vision as it morphs. I've found that digital art is the cleanest, quickest way to serve the client's needs.

FINISHED ART ILLUSTRATION

What is the criterion for a great illustration? A great illustration must be like a positive shockwave to the brain and heart; because that's what the client wants - across the board unforgetableness! Witness Coca Cola's Santa Claus, painted in 1931 by the artist Haddon Sunblom. He created an American icon forever linked to Coke. That snowy bearded man in a fire red suit, with a button nose and irresistable grin, became the template for every ensuing Santa down the decades. Then there's Norman Rockwell's "Thanksgiving". It is seared into every American brain and held as the ideal rendering of a family holiday gathering. Siegel and Shuster's Superman, that caped muscle-man who could move mountains and catch a falling plane in midair, started a slew of knock-off heroes. Although most really good illustration involves simply fulfilling the client's vision to the letter, every illustrator hopes in their heart of hearts to come up with that never to be forgotten masterpiece, often emulated by the competition - beloved and cherished by millions.
